Casting directors come in all shapes and sizes. Some are from Canada, some are from Germany, some are from England, some are from France, and some are from places like America, where the streets are paved with gold and milk and honey flow in the rivers. You may never see two casting directors who look or act anything alike. There are as many types of casting directors as there are productions, and your job is to get along wit all of them.
It may seem like a phony style, a disingenuous move, and
like it has nothing to do with acting or casting, but
why
not learn a little conversational French or German? Study
a little bit of English or Dutch culture. Why? Two reasons.
One, the next casting director you deal with may be from
one of these places, and it's a great way to break the ice
and make them remember you, and two, it's also a great way
to brush up on your acting skills. Every time you learn
something new about another country's history or culture,
or learn to say a few things in another language, you are
increasing your acting skills.
Casting directors are looking for people that they can use for their project, who can act, or have the right look, but also people that they can relate to and get along with. You may be a great actor, but if your people skills are sorely lacking, you may be rubbing casting directors the wrong way and missing out on parts because of it. Be confident, but be humble as well, and remember to maintain a cordial demeanor even if you are auditioning with one of the most abrasive casting directors in the world. They may have an attitude, but they also might hire you.
