Casting auditions are the bread and butter of the working
actress. Without them she is lost in a world of endless
waitressing jobs, wandering the theatres and studios, dreaming
her dream of gracing the silver screen but never quite getting
there, and wondering why. Casting auditions are the only
way an actress has of showing her talents and being seen
by people who can appreciate her
look and abilities.
Casting auditions take many forms. There are announcements in industry magazines for open casting calls, open auditions, cattle calls, and talent searches, and you can also be booked for an audition through an agency or you own agent, which of course most of us don't have. Casting auditions are your chance to practice your craft even if you don't get the part. Can you perform under pressure? Do you get nervous having to act "on the spot", or doing cold readings?
Aside from conquering your fears and believing in yourself, preparing for casting auditions involves putting yourself in a different state of mind. You are not a waitress trying to do your acting thing, you are an actress working on getting a part. You are a professional, and you do not let the situation of coming into a casting audition filled with strange and powerful industry people intimidate you.
