If you are an experienced actor, you know that real casting calls are free. No one should have to pay to participate in casting calls. If it is not free, you know right away that it is a scam and they are taking advantage of people. A legitimate production has their budget set and that includes the cost of running casting calls to get the talent they need. They do not need to re-coup any money from talent to cover these costs.
Some may have another take on the phrase free casting calls.
They may be confusing free casting calls with open auditions,
open casting calls, or cattle calls. These are the kinds
of casting calls that are literally open to the public,
meaning anyone can attend and try to get a part. These are
free, meaning that one does not have to pay to take part,
and you do not need an agent or casting company to get you
signed up for one.
Free casting calls describes what most of us know as any type of casting call that an actor might go on. All casting calls should be free. Sometimes you may see an announcement for talent searches that if you look closely at the fine print, do require some kind of registration or processing fee. Be wary of these because they may not represent actual work, but rather an attempt by a casting company to scoop up new talent for their data-bases. Be sure if you do take part in one of these that there is actual acting work being offered at the end of the day.
